Shadows of the White City

Danger and Romance Abounds at the Chicago World’s Fair

If you’ve never read a Jocelyn Green book, now’s the time to start. She’s the sort of author that makes me want to hang up my writerly hat because her writing is just so beautiful. Plus the girl knows how to knit together a tight plot that keeps you wondering. But enough fangirling…let’s talk Shadows of the White City, shall we?

If you’re a history buff—or even if you’re not—you’ve most likely heard of the famous Chicago World’s Fair that was held in the late nineteenth century. That’s where this story takes place. Though it’s book 2 in the Windy City Saga, you can read it as a stand-alone. There’s danger, mystery, and a sweet romance as well. So if you’re in the market for a good read, this is the title for you. I was fortunate enough to have received an advance copy, so here’s my recommendation:

Here’s a blurb:

The one thing Sylvie Townsend wants most is what she feared she was destined never to have--a family of her own. But taking in Polish immigrant Rose Dabrowski to raise and love quells those fears--until seventeen-year-old Rose goes missing at the World's Fair, and Sylvie's world unravels.

Brushed off by the authorities, Sylvie turns to her boarder, Kristof Bartok, for help. He is Rose's violin instructor and the concertmaster for the Columbian Exposition Orchestra, and his language skills are vital to helping Sylvie navigate the immigrant communities where their search leads.

From the glittering architecture of the fair to the dark houses of Chicago's poorest neighborhoods, they're taken on a search that points to Rose's long-lost family. Is Sylvie willing to let the girl go? And as Kristof and Sylvie grow closer, can she reconcile her craving for control with her yearning to belong?
