Fiction Friday ~ Inside The Innkeeper's Daughter

Meet the main characters of this Regency adventure.

It’s always fun to create new characters—and wow! Did I have a lot of fun with these. Here are some behind-the-scenes insights into some of the main players in The Innkeeper’s Daughter.

Johanna Langley

This proper English heroine is based on one of my sweet Dominican friends named Jennifer. Jennifer dreams of becoming an author, to write the best book she can possibly write, so I gave my heroine the dream of creating the best inn she can possibly establish. I also gave Johanna beguiling brown eyes and long dark hair just like my friend. Here’s a picture of her.

Alexander Moore

Okay. I admit it. I’m a 100% Thor fan. But even before Chris Hemsworth donned a red cape and became a super hero, I was a fan. So much so that I used him as inspiration for hero Alexander Moore. I gave him a bit of a James Bond flair, kind of big with the ladies and a master of intrigue. Of the 3 Bow Street heroes in this series, Alex is the easiest to get along with.

Lucius Nutbrown

Writing this character was a risk. Could I write a believable and sympathetic villain-or-maybe-not that only speaks through a puppet? I was up for the challenge. I got the idea while touring a museum in England where there was a puppet display. Punch and Judy were common puppets and in fact have a tie-in to Bow Street. Magistrate Henry Fielding, before he was a magistrate and came up with the idea of runners, ran his own puppet theater.

Thomas Langley

Thomas is the kid everybody loves to hate. He’s all boy. Super annoying. Shirking work. But lovable to the Nth degree. I had 2 boys of my own so I pulled from their antics.

Of course there are lots more characters to meet in the book, from a musician who can’t play an on-key note to a peg-legged smuggler. And you’ll meet the hero that I’m currently writing about and will be featured in book 3 (The Noble Guardian)…Daniel Thatcher.

Michelle Griep

Michelle Griep is an author, blogger, and occasional super-hero when her cape is clean.
