10 Questions to Ponder After Reading Lost in Darkness

Lost in Darkness is a story that tackles a lot of big issues—issues that are well worth talking about. Here are some discussion questions for you to think about and/or chat about with a book club.

1.  Against her wishes and her better judgment, Amelia goes through with carrying out her father’s desire for Colin to undergo a life-altering surgery. Why did she do that? Would you do such a thing?

2. Which character did you feel knew himself or herself the best and why do you think so? Are you at a point in your life where you know exactly who you are and what you are?

3. Colin says we all have monsters within. What’s one of your hidden monsters?

4. Graham hesitates to go to the authorities when he clearly sees Mr. Peckwood is breaking the law. What is the cause of this hesitation? Do you agree with his initial lack of action? Why or why not?

5. No villain is ever truly all bad. What redeeming qualities did you see in Mr. Peckwood?

6. At a certain point, Amelia decides she must give up her dream. Has there ever been a point in your life when you gave up a dream of yours? What was it? Did you ever circle back to attain that dream?

7. Superstition plays a big part in this story. Do you consider yourself a superstitious person? Why or why not?

8. Lost in Darkness is inspired by Frankenstein, a story of the creator and the created. What, if anything, do you think we as humans owe our Creator? Does our Creator owe us anything?

9. Amelia struggles with perfection. Have you ever struggled with perfection? What’s one way you’ve found to deal with balancing the drive to be perfect with the reality that you are not?
