How to Make an Orange Pomander
In my newest release, Belle’s Christmas Carol, the heroine is big into decorating for Christmas. I am too. And here is one of my favorite best-smelling crafts that’s easy and fun to make for all ages . . .
MATERIALS
1 fresh orange
Whole cloves
1 toothpick, skewer, or pushpin
Ribbon, twine, or lace
Small paper plate or napkin
Optional: straight pins to hold ribbon in place
DIRECTIONS:
Place the orange on a small plate or napkin.
Use a toothpick, skewer, or pushpin to poke small holes in the orange peel where you want the cloves to go. This makes it much easier to press the cloves in without sore fingers.
Press whole cloves into the holes. You can make stripes, swirls, stars, initials, or simply cover the orange in a pretty pattern.
Tie ribbon, twine, or lace around the orange like a wrapped package. Knot or bow it at the top. Use straight pins if needed to help keep the ribbon in place.
Take the pomander home and place it in a bowl, hang it with ribbon, or tuck it into a closet or drawer for a lovely holiday fragrance.
TIP FOR MAKING IN A GROUP SETTING:
Set out a few finished examples for inspiration. Simple stripes are easiest, while swirls and initials look especially charming. Also, cloves can be a bit poky, so toothpicks are your friends. Much like barristers, but quieter.
