Fiction Friday: Desolate Paths
Can mystery and danger lead to hope and healing?
Today I’m handing over the reins to fellow author Erin Unger, so without further adieu…
I’m a huge fan of places like Sturbridge in Massachusetts, Jamestown, the Monacan village in Natural Bridge National Park, and The Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, Virginia. These tourist spots are living museums where historians work as historical people and show us how they lived hundreds of years ago. They are the best way to get a true feel for history. And they make my creative juices flow as to what their daily lives were like compared to mine today.
My love of living history is why I decided to explore what could happen if one of my characters had to jump back a couple hundred years without leaving the 21st century. But Brooke Hollen from my novel, Desolate Paths, didn’t think it was such a great idea the way I did. And what fun it was to dump her out of her comfort zone! Even worse, throw in the worst possible situation to ignite the story even more. You see, Brooke Hollen didn’t only go to live in a museum, she had to deal with rehab and a serial killer. She’d barely ever even done her own laundry let alone washed it by hand—while looking over her shoulder for a killer.
I had so much fun writing this story. But it did take gobs of research. I’m not a historical writer, so it wasn’t so easy. But it was worth the time. And it gave me an excuse to revisit those fantastic museums to dig up more information. If you like history from a unique point of view, find out how Brooke survives rehab and period living in Desolate Paths.

About the Book:

And can she trust Kyle Reston, another rehab resident, who wants to take her under his wing? Or is he responsible for the residents who keep disappearing?
About the Author:
Erin Unger was raised in the hills of Virginia, exploring abandoned houses and reading the scariest books she could find. After marrying so young it would make a great romance novel, she has enjoyed an exciting life with her hubby. But her fast-paced life sometimes rivals the suspense in her books thanks to all her mostly grown children and a couple grandkids. Her novel, Desolate Paths, released January 11, 2019.
